review 1: I have to admit, I never really gave thought to the villain in Beauty and the Beast—or any fairy tale at that, Disney version. In my defense though, I only watched those fairy tales during my younger years because as soon as I realized they are just crap stories with idealistic values, I quit watching them—Disney movies in general to be honest. Successively—but not immediately—I started reading adult and dark-themed books which gave me insights to the deeper meaning of life and the human psychology. Now, going back to this series, I thank the writer for reminding me that fairy tales have villains too who are deserving of giving us their stories. Villains are villains by choice, but something must have been a catalyst as to why they are the way they are. They deserve... more the benefit of the doubt too, don't they?
review 2: 4 stars. This wasn’t my favorite Kingdom book, but it was nevertheless enjoyable if you look over the fact that love in two days isn’t very believable…The one thing I completely hated was the French. I get that French is supposed to be a sexy language, but it would be sound even better if what Gerard said actually made sense and didn’t sound like Google Translation. Here are a few examples:“Fils de salope,” : the English equivalent would be ‘son of a bitch’, but you can’t actually use that combination in French. A better phrase would be ‘fils de chien’ (‘chien’=dog) or ‘fils de pute’ (‘pute’=whore)“Mon petite chou,”: ‘mon’ and ‘chou’ are masculine, whereas the adjective ‘petite’ is feminine.“Mon petite,” : same story“mon Cherie”: ditto“femme vipere”: is that supposed to mean vixen? Or sexy? I don’t get it.“The fille looked…”: ‘fille’ means girl, which doesn’t really apply to Betty. Also, I’m not a fan of French words in the idle of the sentence.“L’enfer sanglant”: This one is my favorite. I couldn’t help laughing at that one which is a literal translation of the British swearing words: ‘bloody hell’. Apart from being quite funny, it had the effect of making Gerard completely ridiculous. less
