review 1: This book was almost as good a motivator as watching an episode of Hoarders. I am waiting until after Christmas to start my "Tidying Up" which I think will be far more painful than this book would lead you to believe. I found some of Kondo's ideas positively bizarre. Why would I empty my purse at the end of every day only to refill it with the same items in the morning? I also doubt the value (for me, anyway) of thanking my items for a job well done when I put them away. My family will assuredly look at me like I'm nuts if I start doing that. I am, however, going to try to adopt her method of folding and storing clothes. I do find that things in the bottom of my drawers are forgotten about more often than not.
review 2: I am many years into the 'does this brin
... moreg joy' process. Still Ms. Kondo has lots of interesting ideas even if some feel a bit like scorched earth. As an artist I am going to ditch some of her criteria, we thrive on raw material, that is if we can find them and if we have a clear space to work! This is where the book comes in. I will definitely refold my clothes and in the process lighten up. We will be moving shelves and in the process lighten up. I will permit myself the comfort of manuals for my new stove, heaters and oven. It really is easier for me to go to the file and read what I need in print rather than looking up the manual online having tried both. Her order of operations and thoughts about storage are salient. I actually like her statements of appreciation; our things do work for us, why not make a point of appreciating them. This emphasizes what we do not appreciate and shows us what can go to the thrift store. All in all this is a useful little gem in the organization genre. I might even get rid of some of my others :) less
