review 1: A short prequel by Marie Rutkoski, following young Arin (The Winner's Curse), when his mum is still alive in pre-war Herran. The story that his mum shares with Arin is lovely, sweet and sad. I love that there are resonances from The Winner's Curse in this short story, the emotions involved in it. We also gain a glimpse into how curious, inquisitive and clever Arin is from an early age, that manifests itself and is made apparent in The Winner's Curse, when he's grown up and becomes Kestrel's slave, rival at Bite and Sting, and more.

... moreor him. We also get to see her sad end at the very start of the war between the Valorians and Harrani. I read this extremely short novella before I read The Winner's Curse and I am glad I did. It gave great insight to how cruel war can be and that only love matters. Arin became more of a hero for me while reading TWC because of this. less
