review 1: I really enjoyed the author's book, Shadow Society, so decided to read her earlier middle school series and I'm glad I did. This book has engaging characters with a well-paced plot that will keep kids reading to see if our heroine Petra can steal her father's eyes back from the nefarious prince who has evil plots brewing. One of the more fun characters is Petra's tin spider, Astrophile, and with my severe arachnophobia I thought about not reading this book when I found out about this character, but I kept reading and truly enjoyed this spider's personification. (insert fond reminiscence about Charlotte's Web here)While this book definitely resolved its main conflict, it easily paves the way for the next book in this trilogy.

... moreantasy set in Bohemia. It drew me in from the cover design and the blurb on the back, and it didn't disappoint. I loved the world building, especially the look at crafts (metalwork, glasswork, dyes), which held true to our world's version of these things in many ways, but had small fantasy elements that made them just a little extra-wondrous. It's been a while since I've read a MG book that didn't rely heavily on humor; this book had a couple of humorous parts, but relied much more on that sense of wonder I mentioned. It made me think of a YA fantasy minus the romance. I'll be keeping an eye out for the second book. less
