review 1: I agree with other reviewers that the artwork was amazing. It WAS breath-taking. But, the story wasn't what I expected given the title, cover and description. For me, the relationship between Rose and Windy was lacking. "It's a good thing Rose and Windy have each other" the back cover says. Instead, they seemed to co-exist through mutual moments of boredom, chat a bit and irritate each other. I didn't really pick up on them helping one another or even valuing their relationship much. I felt duped. Meanwhile the story runs away on its own drama. As others have mentioned, the themes were quite adult, which is fine. But the characters are quite immature and they just don't grow. They seem to have very flat reactions to the really big stuff going on (trying to avoid sp... moreoilers). It's disturbing. Then, as other reviewers have mentioned, the story doesn't really close on any level. That's fine too. Life isn't always neat and clean. But the combination of all these factors just left me feeling dissatisfied. At the end, I didn't see the sense of promise that some others have reported. I just felt grey and confused. Maybe that's the reader response the authors were after?
review 2: A beautiful graphic novel that captures the spirit of its young adult themes much more accurately than many young adult fiction books I've read. Something about the art, the style, the simple, subtle, but effective text... it all works perfectly here to explore typical teenage themes: friendship, family conflict, strong emotion, the allure of older kids, boredom and the leaving behind of things outgrown. It's a shame that GNs are such quick reads, since a novel like this demands careful attention and respect. less

The art was great, and the story was sad but in a good way.
