review 1: This is the same powerhouse duo that created graphic novel “Skim” in 2008. The two main characters are young teens Rose and Windy. They are reunited each summer at Awago Beach, where their families meet up for summer holiday. The girls pass away the days splashing and playing at the beach, watching bad horror movies and ogling over boys. A group of older, local teens add some drama to the summer gossip, including a teen pregnancy. The girls waver between relishing their innocence and yearning to grow up. A poignant coming of age graphic novel. Beautiful illustrations in unique blue-purple ink. Some adult situations and language, probably best for 8th and up.
review 2: Lovely multi-layered characters, beautiful art and page use. This book is marketed
... more YA, and probably works well as such, but not being YA myself, I found a lot that was very worthwhile in this book, that might not make any impact on the (apparent) target audience at all. I found myself rooting for the mother, and sympathizing, as the parent of a teen. To me, rather than being about the "first" that one encounters as one grows up, this book was about learning compassion, and it brought the importance of compassion across beautifully. less

3.5 ⭐ The artwork was great, but the story was lacking a plot. However, I still enjoyed it!
