review 1: [Review from 2010]. Marilyn Chandler McEntyre's "Caring for Words in a Culture of Lies" is a beautiful meditation on words from the perspective of a Christian scholar who teaches the English language and literature.I loved the poetry excerpts she discusses, and her thoughtful meditations on caring for words, reading, conversing, telling stories, enjoying poetry, practicing translation, praying, playing, and dwelling in silence - a needed counterpart to all our words! My only critique is that at times, her critical words towards culture are a bit clang-y, and perhaps not in the way she intended. But overall, a book that thrills as you taste the words and read them aloud!
review 2: A fantastic book for anyone hopelessly in love with the English language. Less of
... morea call to arms than an impassioned invitation, McEntyre reminds her reader of all that is great about our words. She also makes a strong case for why we, as speakers of English, must strive to treat it with the respect it deserves. She takes a much more encouraging, enlightening tack than other books I have seen on the topic. Although it is tangential to her main point, she also reminds Christians that we too are People of the Book, of the Word. less
