review 1: A Thousand Splendid Suns was a brilliantly written portrait of two Afghani women, Miriam and Laila. Khaled Hosseini, author of The Kite Runner, writes with unusual depth and sensitivity of the often brutal treatment of women in a male-dominated society. The story is tense and gripping, and the recent historical background under Afghanistan's kaleidoscope of Islamic regimes is insightful. My only reservation is the the switch of tenses in the narrative towards the end of the book.
review 2: This book has a special place in my heart. Like The Kite Runner it takes place in Afghanistan and opens your eyes to a world unlike ours. I really liked this book because it was about women and their struggles and perseverance with the hands they were dealt. I loved each one
... moreof them, and was so happy when they found love for each other. I was mentally exhausted after reading this book. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I read so few of them that are in the “real world”. less
