review 1: I read this Great Stone Face nominee 2013-2014 with a group of 4th graders and all but one of them really loved it. There is no shortage of drama here and students really got involved in discussing the ethics of some of the events and decisions in the book. The family secret that is alluded to really kept them reading as well. I thought this was a great book for discussion of family relationships, hospital care, and legal v. ethical decisions.
review 2: Deep, touching story of a girl's coming-of-age in West Virginia. One of my new favorites. Even though it's filled with dialect, I found it authentic (as a WV girl myself) and it didn't distract. Hopeful yet heartrending. I truly hope Shank writes more novels like this, which you can see is truly from the hear
... moret. I loved this quote by Lydia (the main character's) Mom: "We always been rich, Lydia. We just ain't had much money." The world needs more books like this. less
