review 1: I almost put the book down before I started but I was intrigued on how the Marina Mander would deal with a sad and depressing circumstance. I'm glad I didn't. The book was extremely well written from the point of view of Luca, the young boy whose mother dies in the apartment leaving him now alone, on his own. His train of thought carries you effortlessly from subject to subject all the while seeing the shift in his emotions. While his narrative constantly seems to shift between childlike to adultlike , I can't help wonder if this was intentional or perhaps the result of translation? In either case, I could feel and understand Luca completely. And while Luca's fate is left unknown I feel Marina left it that way to truly appreciate Luca's narrative.

... mores was a much quicker read than I had anticipated. There were three or four times where I had to put the book down because Luca's thoughts were just so utterly heart-breaking, his questions as to why his mom would leave him, if he was not enough to make her like and want to live life, so devastating; but overall I just couldn't really get absorbed. I also didn't like the ending much, even though I understand why the book closed the way it did. less

I wanted it to go on a little longer and find out what happens to the mother's body.

Dark and haunting covered in a layer of beauty. Definitely my kind of story telling.

It's all about the spin in this heartbreaking story of Luca and his mother.
