review 1: "The First True Lie", by Marina Mander was a slightly morbid story. A young boy, Luca, wakes up to go to school. Luca's mother is still asleep, which is not unusual for her. When Luca returns, she still hasn't gotten up. Luca discovers that his mother isn't sleeping, but has died in the bed. His fear of going to an orphanage causes him to continue living his life, as normally as possible, while his mother's dead body lays decomposing in the bedroom. Very strange story.
review 2: I have gone back and forth between giving this book 2 or 3 stars... I really wish I could give it 2.5 but I can't. After reading the back jacket, I thought this would be a wonderfully original story. It is original, but the delivery is lacking. I found her use of 'colorful language'
... moreto be gratuitious and distracting from the story. At times, I felt she made Luca MUCH too worldly for his age...... And, as another reviewer stated, I think the 2nd half of the novel is missing. It ended so abruptly and I think she could have made this a much richer and fuller story had she continued it on into when it was discovered that he was truly an orphan. I have read many novels that end abruptly and it works for the story, even makes the end better. That didn't work with this novel for me - it left me disappointed. less

If ROOM and THE CURIOUS INCIDENT OF A DOG... Had a baby, it would be this book. Haunting and unique.

This book was a real struggle for me to get through. I just didn't find it interesting at all.

Great quick read- and a wonderful climactic ending that put me on the edge of my seat!

I liked the book as far as it went but didn't love where it chose to end.

What a disturbing little book/story. Hard to read, hard to put down.
