review 1: It's not the most riveting book, but I did enjoy it. The author did a decent job describing life as a Yankee in a tiny Southern town whose most famous resident has not left the twentieth century. I really enjoyed the rapport the author established with Alice Lee, who in many ways is more interesting than her famously reclusive sister. It made me want to reread Harper Lee's classic, which I hadn't read since 8th grade. Good thing, since my daughter's English class will be reading To Kill A Mockingbird this year.
review 2: This was written by someone who grew up in Madison and later moved to Chicago to write for the Tribune. She was sent to Harper Lee's hometown on assignment, then later moved there while she recuperated from a lupus exacerbation. I think I
... moreremember reading that Harper Lee denounced this book when it was published, and cast the author in a bad light for writing things that were supposed to be off the record. At its core, it is just a nice story of two old ladies, who happen to be sisters, and the town folk who support them so they can age in place. Each sister is remarkable in her own right, Nelle Harper for writing "the book", and Alice Lee for her pioneering work as an attorney in the deep south at a time when women did little more than lunch & cards. less
