review 1: I’m giving this book 5 stars because the author writes such fine prose, you would think she is far older than her picture on Amazon implies. She is polished, she is talented and she is smart. I really am happy to discover her books and will definitely be reading quite a few of them (definitely from the Dirk & Steele series). The plot tackles an extremely dark subject – child pornography – and if this is a trigger for you, stay away from this book. It gets a bit explicit, and I wish it hadn’t (just for my own comfort zone), but it definitely establishes two characters as depraved villains. And then there is the witch – truly vile (cannibalism here – also not pleasant). But at the end, she meets her finale with utter satisfaction for the reader – a real bucket ... moreof water over the head moment). Not sure exactly the how of it was accomplished, but who cares – it felt good to read! The book was riveting. There is relative insta-love between Aggie and Charlie (who is essentially perfect, more perfect than most heroes in paranormal, but I really liked him, so that was OK). Only one slightly graphic sex scene (which is a departure for most of the paranormal written today) but another caution – interspecies sex. But since gargoyles aren’t real, hey, why not?Ignore the cover – it’s kind of cheesy looking and has absolutely nothing to do with the book – and pick it up. Devour it. If you like paranormal that is dark and gritty, with some romance thrown in, you will love this.
review 2: This is a re-read for me, as I have the anthology Dark Dreamers. It has been awhile, and I love Marjorie M Liu's Dirk & Steele series of supernatural detectives who come in all shapes and sizes, as well as all have different talents! It is a very interesting series where this group of people and beings go into danger to help, or help find those who need help in the areas where it is hard to get to! There is also another group who capture and experiment on beings like them, called the Consortium, which they don't always show up in all the stories. Warning: spoilers! In this novella, Charlie is a gargoyle who has been imprisoned with his brothers by a dark witch who tortures him endlessly, and when it's bad enough his soul travels. His spirit is drawn to a young girl who has been captured and used by sexual predators for kiddie porn.. many thousands of miles from where he and his brothers are kept. He is disparate to help her, and since he can't physically do anything, he searches to find one who can!Aggie Durand is a clairvoyant who works for Dirk & Steele. Both her and her partner had just saved a young boy whose life was in danger, and his situation is also tied to the kiddie porn ring that is becoming too prevalent! When Charlie encounters her bright soul, he knows he has found his avenging angel! This was a great story! I loved how Aggie is eventually able to connect with Charlie to help this young girl, and what she eventually does later in the story to help Charlie's situation is amazing! less

I adore Marjorie M Liu's writing but this novella just felt kind of "blah" to me.

A good read. Glad to have read an engaging romance outside my usual genre.
