Dirk & Steele
review 1: This is another Dirk & Steele novel and I loved this one because I FINALLY get Eddie's backstory. What can I say but I love firestarters (blame that one on Stephen King). The story is dark and in some spots caught me by surprise, which is a good thing. I didn't feel bored or lost with the plot, so the book is able to stand on its own without the reader having had to read other Dirk & Steele novels.
review 2: This was a gripping read from the start! It starts with Dirk & Steele agent Eddie in a cage at the agency, but it's because he's been having a harder time controlling his fire due to a pathogen he was exposed to in a previous novel. He is given an assignment to find and protect a young woman who is one of the last of her kind. Lyssa has been on the run and
... more in hiding for over 10 years from the people who murdered her parents, and she has found refuge in the underground tunnels of Manhattan, NY. Like Eddie, fire is her weapon, and her curse. She also dreams of eyes within flames many nights. When she finally meets the person whose eyes match those in her dream, she wants nothing to do with him. Of course, those eyes belong to Eddie, and from the moment he set eyes on her, he feels compelled to try and earn her trust. Lannes the gargoyle and his wife (who is a witch) are on hand to help Eddie, and it was great to see these characters again! Especially as I just recently re-read his brother Charlie's novella which was in the Dark Dreamer's anthology. I also enjoyed learning about Eddie's background, and more is revealed that makes a lot of sense in how he is the way he is! I loved Eddie and Lyssa together, and that it took time for them to really get to know each other. The Cruor Venator are the Big Bad after Lyssa. They are witches of the worst kind, they kill to absorb the essence of their victims, and if they are supernatural, they also gain the ability of whomever they kill. Super scary to encounter, no one can withstand them. That's all I will say on what happens in the story. If you are a fan of the Dirk & Steele series like I am, than you will love this story too! If you have never read this series, but are a fan of the early Anita Blake stories by Laurell K Hamilton, and the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, then you might want to give this series a try. It'll be worth your time! less
