review 1: Sadly, this big event comic is pretty bad. It starts off quite strong, with a nice return of the Marauders and a group that at first appeared to be (but apparently was not) the Reavers. There's mystery and some out-of-sequence storytelling, and it's all for the good.Then the plotline meanders off into nowhere, and it feels like the event wedding comes out of nowhere, as overly melodramatic relationship suddenly takes center stage. The out-of-sequence storytelling, meanwhile ends up being used mainly for unearned shock value.By the end of the book we've got a wedding, but no closure, and you're kind of left saying, "What!?"My suspicion is that the event got out of control and it overwhelmed the comic, or maybe it's that Liu can't write relationships well. In any case, what ... morecould have been a good comic fell apart somewhere along the way.I hadn't realized quite how bad this volume was until I noted that I was pretty uninterested in reading Liu's next volume, because this one had been such an uneven, unfinished mishmash.
review 2: After some ups and downs as a series after Joss Whedon left, a proper creative team for Astonishing X-Men sees its quality skyrocket back up to an emotional, engaging, and downright interesting book once again. The plot around Northstar's wedding feels natural, if a little quick, and this volume ends on an intriguing cliffhanger which is picked up on nicely in volume 11. Mike Perkins' art is almost always solid, with only the occasional dodgy facial expression to let it down. less
