review 1: Loved how Hugo showed such loyalty in finding out what happened to his friend the bookseller. Interesting concept of having the booksellers as a front for drug sales. Had lots of action and intrigue. A bit of everything. Incorporated some of the past into the action in the present by having a secret contained in a book that people were looking for mixed in with the rivalry with the two gangs trying to control of drug sales in Paris. Really enjoyed the characters and it was well written. It wandered all over Paris so you were able to get a feel for the city in different sections.
review 2: I had a mixed reaction to this book. It started great, with the main character, Hugo Marston, the head of security at the US embassy in Paris, witnessing the kidnapping
... more of the operator of a book stall on the streets of Paris. He reported the incident to the police but they seemed indifferent and didn't seem to take Marston seriously. Since Marston is a former FBI agent, he knew what he saw was real. So he begins to investigate on his own.The plot is good and the characters are, mostly, well done. The exception is Marston's old FBI pal Tom Green. Green is the only character whose dialog includes extreme profanity. I can't help but feel that the author submitted the manuscript for this book and his editor told him that, while the story was good, you really need to add some cuss words. So, for some reason, the author put all of the profanity into one character. It just sounds really strange that others in the story are facing suspenseful and dangerous situations without being profane but this guy can barely say hello without letting go a blue stream. It just doesn't ring true to me. It's good story and worth reading but brace yourself for Tom. less
