review 1: The first in a series, introducing the main character. A man in law enforcement, an American in France with all the problems that can arise when he is more curious and concerned than maybe he should be.A "friend", a bookseller, is kidnapped in front of our hero and the story goes along with solving the kidnapping, finding a girlfriend, solving an auxiliary crime and becoming content with his life.I will be reading more of this series.
review 2: It was OK. The plot moved along nicely, and the setting in Paris was fun. Altho' not billed a "mystery" as such it sorta hinted at that, but in the end it was another "taking on the drug syndicate" actioner...meh. Hugo Marston is head of security at the American Embassy, and gets involved in trying to rescue his friend
... moreMax, an older bookstall owner who is kidnapped in front of Hugo's eyes. He doesn't feel the French authorities are pursuing the case diligently enough and takes matters into his own hands; the degree of latitude he's given by those French police stretches the limits of credulity, but the pot boils quickly enough to let that go. As well, the book begins with him mourning the recent death of his marriage to Christine, but in a rebound romance of warpspeed proportions he soon becomes involved with Claudia Roux who is a reporter and also just HAPPENS to be the daughter of a man seemingly involved in the disappearance of his friend Max...anyway, if you're looking for a quick beach read, this should fit the bill, but don't expect much more than that. less

Very satisfying read. Love the Paris setting. Strong characters, great language and plotting.

The plot was not quite sophisticated enough and the characters needed more development.
