review 1: Dark and intense. I had to remind myself several times that this is technically young adult fiction. I loved the descriptions of running--why we run, why we suffer, and what it feels like. It was a little tough to read on a beautiful and sunny summer day. I'd recommend saving it for a rainy or snowy winter day. My mood felt darker after I finished it. I think if I read this in high school I would put it right up there with Catcher in the Rye as a book that really "gets it."
review 2: I would give the ending of this story five stars, but that is the best part of the book. The story, set primarily in the late 60s, is told by a teenage boy who is a misfit. His family has never recovered from the loss of their other son. In addition, they are Jewish and escaped
... morethe horrors of WWII to come to America. The boy eventually finds track and a few friends. It is the relationship between one of those friends - Ray - upon which the crux of this novel hinges. It is a heartbreaking story of a child who tries to do the right thing but is perceived as a trouble-maker. Though told from Jon's perspective, I found this was really Ray's story. less
