As One Dark Throne is the second book in the Three Dark Crowns series, this review may contain spoilers from the first book. As always, all opinions are all my own, please don’t be offended if you disagree with me, it is not my intention to offend you.

Goodreads synopsis:
The battle for the Crown has begun, but which of the three sisters will prevail?
With the unforgettable events of the Quickening behind them and the Ascension Year underway, all bets are off. Katharine, once the weak and feeble sister, is stronger than ever before. Arsinoe, after discovering the truth about her powers, must figure out how to make her secret talent work in her favour without anyone finding out. And Mirabella, once thought to be the strongest sister of all and the certain Queen Crowned, faces attacks like never before—ones that put those around her in danger she can’t seem to prevent.
In this enthralling sequel to Kendare Blake’s New York Times bestselling Three Dark Crowns, Fennbirn’s deadliest queens must face the one thing standing in their way of the crown: each other.

I really don’t know where to start with this one. I am so conflicted as to how I feel about the Three Dark Crowns series. I love the premise and the idea of it, it’s so different and original but the writing does my head in. I can’t really pinpoint what I don’t like about it, it may be the 3rd-person point of view but it just doesn’t fit with me. It’s a bit jumpy and just doesn’t really flow smoothly. The books are also quite hard to follow, with three different perspectives, each with at least five side characters.

If I ignored the writing style, I really liked the plot and the direction this book went. As it is the sequel, I expected it to be a ‘filler book’ but it really wasn’t. It was action packed and had some great battle scenes and was fast-paced with good character development.

I may not be selling this book very well, but I do honestly really like One Dark Crown – the characters, the plot, the idea, pretty much everything but the writing. This sequel really stepped up the game for this series, it’s so much more darker with so many more twists, turns and surprises.

Although, it left me with a few questions about the magic and political system within this strange universe, which I expect (and hope) to receive the answers to in the next two books to come out in this series.

I think that’s all I have to say about One Dark Throne, if you enjoyed the first one, or even was unsure about it, I would recommend this one, it is just as good as Three Dark Crowns.

Thanks for reading! I know this is very small and probably not a very good review, I just can’t really think of what to say about One Dark Throne. Let me know your thoughts, I would love to know!
