review 1: A very informative and accessible read. the author explores the microbiome of the human body and the effects that our dependence on antibiotics has upon it My only gripe is the way in which he presenta research as black and white. the phrase "correlation does.not prove causation" can apply to many of the studies he presents in the book.Also...maybe it's because I'm the mother of a two-and-a-half year old, but I think he paints a terrifying portrait of something that can genuinely do some good for us. Our doctors are very cautious when it comes to antibiotics, but now I'm filled with anxiety every time the word comes up. But I guess that's what the author intended-- to really think twice before accepting this "panacea" in your life.
review 2: This book was an i
... morenteresting and thought-provoking read. I suggested it to my book group after seeing the author on The Daily Show. After reading the book, I'm interested in learning more about what can be done to stop the over-use of antibiotics, how I can personally limit my exposure, and what can be done to correct the damage. One thing that strikes me is how we often take the easy path in the present without understanding or acknowledging the future consequences. Like the author, I do think that antibiotics play a crucial role in our medical system, but I think it will take a lot to convince people to change their habits and expectations with regard to antibiotic prescriptions. The larger problem, and certainly the more difficult to really change problem, is the use of antibiotics in the animals we raise for food. I'm not sure how willing people will be in to pay higher prices for meat and dairy products not in order to avoid a possible future antibiotic winter. less
