review 1: I wished I enjoyed this more than I did. I like historical fiction and enjoyed learning a bit about a period that I don't know a lot about. I wanted to like the main characters, but they seemed flat and two dimensional. The language seemed too modern. There was a passage that rested on the victim calling his killer a bastard. It may have to do with the translation, but it would have made sense to use the proper meaning of the word and not a modern take on it. The plot was thin and slow moving and the resolution wasn't convincing. I'm not sure if it's worth me reading any of the others.
review 2: Mildly amusing, but ultimately the history and the characters really weren't fleshed out that much. It was written in very modern language, which, while making it easy
... moreto read also made the entire setting of the story kind of pointless. In general, it felt like a platform for the author to show his knowledge of the history of England during the time period and the differences between the groups of peoples (Angles, Saxons, Danes and Vikings), although the author didn't REALLY tell the reader that much about those people. I love a good historical fiction. I love a good murder mystery. I love a great tongue-in-cheek, saucy main character. This tried to hit all three and only barely succeeded. less
