review 1: This is an impressive picture book reflecting the powerful speech Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. gave at the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington back in 1963. This is a powerful moment in the history of America’s equality. This book would be appropriate to read to students during the month of February for Black History month. The subject of freedom and equality for all is still relevant today. This book provides young readers an important introduction into out nations past. “I have a dream” is a Caldecott Honor winner with the help of Kadir Nelson’s magnificent painting. I enjoyed reading this book and the story of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and his march on Washington. The author did an okay job but the illustrator did an impeccable job. This is a book that... more I would recommend to educators and parents to share with their kids.
review 2: Really enjoyed this book! I have never really read the whole Martin Luther King Jr. speech but I knew of it and what it was about from my own dad who loved it. When I was in school my dad was the principal of the small Christian school that I went to and every year my mom would have him a picture or saying framed for him to hang and this speech was one of his all time favorites. After reading it I feel bad that I waited until I was 30 years old to do so because it is a very powerful and meaningful speech that still applies today. We always talk about how are kids are suppose to feel safe in the classroom and that it is a place that they can be free to talk, share their ideas, and be themselves, this is a book that you could use at the beginning of the school year and throughout to remind the kids of just that. Every child should be equal no matter of their race, ability, class, or gender! The illustrations in this book were simple and colorful. Although they did not help tell the story they added to the story with their colors and themes. Overall loved the book and would use it in my classroom if not even add it to my own personal collection. less
