review 1: This is my guilty pleasure too! Although the story is not worth 5 stars, I always enjoy learning about some new aspects of the Dordogne (which I know well) or French history that I hadn't heard of before. In this novel I learnt about the biggest train robbery of all time, which really did happen in Neuvic in 1944, making many people, including André Malraux, become suddenly rich. Fascinating! Woven around that is a historically accurate account of the secret U.S. assistance to the French nuclear program after 1970, and a storyline about gays, burglaries, and illegal antique trading. So, all in all, Martin Walker has given us a cozy mystery with a bonus. Thank you Martin!
review 2: Always fun to read another episode in the life of Chief Bruno this one with some
... more WWII history thrown in. I usually read these books in the summer, and while reading, I feel like I've taken a vacation in a small village in France and feasted on French cuisine. And of course, there's always the update on Bruno's love life..... Will he and Isabelle ever resolve their differences or will he settle for another with her always lurking in the back of his heart? This installment doesn't give you much hope, but there's always the next book! Great summer escapism read. less
