review 1: I am a fan of this author, she has written some great stuff, particularly Frog and her Change of Heart series. And I did like this story overall, but the God complex of the MC kinda bugged me. He is, as typical of Mary Calmes stories, beautiful, beloved by all and totally unaware of it. But in this book, he blithely destroys friends and families lives so casually. One minute 'I’m leaving', the next minute 'ok, I’ll return to you though I told you I was leaving you for your own good'. The whims on this guy! Sheesh! He leaves his lover, decides suddenly to see his family. Is reunited with his family and says 'haven’t seen you in 13 years but I can’t stay'. He smiles in the face of his brothers worrying over him, and that drove me nuts for some reason. I did see throu... moregh the course of the book that he struggled with some serious stuff, but honestly I hated how he treated everyone like they were of no consequence. Still, I did like the story overall, liked the characters for the most part. Didn’t get a good sense of Craig, his lover but of course he was a prince of a guy so what’s not to love? Solid three stars for me.
review 2: An emotionally driven short story from Mary Calmes with slightly darker undertones than her normal offerings. Like another review I've read about it I agree that the story would have proffered more if it had been longer. There was a lot more to explore from each of Eli's/ Jacobs separate lives, but having said that it was still a satisfying read. Not sure if I would want to reread it again but having read all her others I'm glad I did give it a go.I like Mary Calmes books and am one of her readers who doesn't have a problem with the fact that her stories and characters follow the same lines in every book - if I'd got fed up I'd have stopped buying them long ago and saved a lot of money because I don't think she's going to change her MO anytime soon - so I would say that even though this has shades of her normal character traits it's probably the least like her usual type. Perhaps that's why its 4*s for me and not 5! Still a worthy read though. less
