review 1: Proof of Heaven tells the story of a young boy, Colm, who suffers from a rare disease which causes his heart to totally stop at random times until he is resuscitated. At the age of 5 he has already experienced this occurrence 4 times. His mother, Catherine, was abandoned by Colm's father while she was pregnant with Colm. She is willing to any lengths to find healing for him and help him to live. Her brother, Sean, is also very devoted to Colm, but struggles with alcoholism. After one of Colm's heart failure incidences, an Indian cardiologist, Gaspar Basu, is called in on Colm's case. While treating Colm, he becomes deeply involved personally with Catherine and Colm. He had come to the United States after losing his son and wife in tragic circumstances. Although Col... morem's health condition is a large focus of the novel, the beliefs of the 4 characters in regard to death, miracles, and belief in God are woven throughout the novel. Sean, Colm, and Dr. Basu have rejected belief that a miracle is going to save Colm's life but Catherine clings to this belief in the face of Colm continuing to decline. Another theme in the book is Colm's continuing desire to find his father and have his father accept him. Although I thought there were good parts to the novel, overall it was disappointing. There were many situations that just didn't seem to fit or just didn't make sense.
review 2: The description of the book was very misleading - there was hardly any "search" for a proof of heaven. The premise of the book, a child with an unheard of disease, and keeps dying over and over, was a bit hard to swallow. Then, the trip to search for a miracle cure in Assisi was not well developed, almost senseless, and left me wanting more. Next, the author completely switched gears and the boy went looking for his real dad, and the whole entourage of people are able to travel cross country with this boy? The medical treatments were expensive, but were never explained how this woman could take all this time off from a low-paying job, and pay hundreds of thousands of dollars. The ending was extremely unbelievable, and this "proof" was no proof at all. The author attempted, but did not succeed, in bringing in snippets of religion, atheism, and agnosticism, but was never convincing with any of it. In its entirety, I was very disappointed in this book, and would caution anyone who is looking for a book similar to "Heaven Is For Real", this is not for you. less
