review 1: Laura, a sad girl, discovers that she had the power to travel into the past thanks to a magic sword. She needs to go to a certain place and help a certain someone. That’s all she knows thanks to her new (also time travelling) friends.I bought this book because I thought it would involve more about the topic of self mutilation. "Desperately unhappy, Laura has resorted to self-harming. But Laura is a Stravagante, somebody who can travel in time and space."And sure, they talk about it and she struggles with it. But the main story is that they are people who are able to travel in time and space. Silly me.Another thing I got wrong was that I thought it was like a single book. But in fact it is the last in a series of 6. I think that the other books cover the stories of Lau... morera (the main character) her friends. And I think that if I had read them first that I would be a bit more comfortable with all the names. There are a shitload of characters and since Laura travels to a city in Italy it’s so hard to remember all the names and the families. But the story is fun if you don’t give up in the first half. You have to pay attention on who is who (a shitload of different names I tell you) and where they are. Because of the time travel you get 2 point of views basicly in different times. And that’s also kinda confusing. Why do I give it 4 books out of 5? Well the idea of the story is very lovely and the writing style is also easy to read (the book was in dutch, and the translation was easy). But the names had me a bit off. I got really confused on who the hell they were talking about. But I think I might give the other books a go. ps. I bought the dutch version on a book fair.
review 2: The 6th installment of the Stravaganza sequence features Laura who is a self-harmer and ironically stravagates to the City of Swords. There she meets Ludo who had revealsed himself to be half Manoush and half di Chimici. This causes a civil war as Old Prince Jacpop dies and Ludo challenges Princess Lucia's claim to the throne of Fortezza.I was very excited when reading this, as I have loved the entire series! Other plots came together, including the long awaited marriage of Arianna and Luciano. I felt that Laura and Ludo's relationship was a little far-fetched, I can understand the concept of love at first sight but they barely had anything to do with each other, and so I found this a little unbelievable.Despite this, I am giving City of Swords 5*, but am VERY disappointed that there will not be any more installments. less
