review 1: Sigh....This book tries to be everything to everybody and trying to be politically correct at the same time. Let try to cram in every type of family, family situation, and every conceivable life scenario. That is a tall order! And well, it is at time depressing...I little TOO real. I did not like this one at all, BUT if you need to talk about diversity, or a kids with two dads/moms this might be a good one... but all in all TOO MUCH in such a small book. Each Scenario could have been its own book.
review 2: This informational text shows children just how many ways in which families can be alike or how they can be different. The author, Mary Hoffman, touches on several different aspects of home life (ex. the types of jobs parents have, what types of homes peopl
... moree live in, what types of holidays and celebrations people celebrate). The author does a great job at making children feel connected to the book (ex. “In this book are a lot of families living in different ways. Perhaps there’s one like yours?”). As a teacher, this would be a great book to read at the beginning of the school year when children are still getting to know each other. I would read the book to my class and then talk about how our families were like the ones in the book (ex. “I have a family that prefers ready-made meals too”), and how they were different (ex. “My family does not celebrate Christmas but we do celebrate Hanukkah”). I would then assign a project for the children where I would give them posters that had labeled boxes for several categories (ex. Celebrations, Family Traditions, Food, Jobs, People in my Family, etc.), I would have them draw a picture in each of the boxes that lets us know about their home life. I would then have the students tell us about what they drew in each of their boxes. This book relates to my topic because it shows not only the different people that make up a family but also where they live, eat, what jobs they have, and so on. This is a great book and I recommend it to any teacher. less
