Love

If you love someone, you are signing up for loss.

They don’t tell you this in grade school. They leave it out of fairy tales.

If you love someone, you will lose them.

Love is a contract.

In the fine lines (the ones you did not read before you signed it)

It reads Love = Loss.

Interpret as you please.

If you love someone, you will lose them.

Through a break-up, estrangement, silence, divorce,

Separation, anger, or death.

This is not cynicism. This is fact.

Reason for living every day like it’s your last.

Breathe in your lover when you embrace.

Memorize the sweet fusion of sweat, soap, and pheromones.

Learn the lines on your grandmother’s face as much as her stories.

Stand still amidst the calm chaos of your home.

Kiss your children (furry or human) over and over and over

And when they protest, blame me.

Tell them you read the contract. That love=loss. They don’t know this yet.

Explain that love is a great and wonderous thing.

You will lose it, yes, but

To love is like being lost in a sunset,

Beautiful, mesmerizing, but brief, and dark when it goes away.

You cannot help but get lost in it.

But to love is to be alive. To love is to be human.

Tell them, over and over

Be as alive and as human as you can be.

Love with every ember of your being.

Love with every bit of your body.

Whether aching, lithe, strong, or failing.

Because when it comes down to it,

what else do we have?
