review 1: This book is all about the voice. Miller is able to inhabit her protagonist's perspective more fully than any book I can remember; reading this book felt like really being 15 again. It's a slow-moving coming of age story, centered around the Metcalf family's road trip across the country for the Rapture. But that very pace, which made it a bit difficult to get into at first, is also the source of its brilliance. 'The Last Days of California' builds up to a strong emotional climax through a collection of minutiae. I wanted this book to continue and was sad to finish it, even though I adored the last lines. Miller's novel is a compelling portrait of a family and I would highly recommend it. Looking forward to reading more of her work.
review 2: It's hard to captur
... moree the brilliance of this novel. It's a beautiful, real snapshot of family life in modern times. This coming-of-age story features a wonderful heroine, Jess, who tells the story of her's family journey with warmth and wit. The two sisters, different as night and day, are wonderful characters. The zealous element of the rapture, combined with the mundane road-trip across the country, is a perfect backdrop for this story. I loved every word. less
