review 1: It was learning that Hildegard was an anchorite that caused me to pick up this novel. I had no idea the Catholic church walled up people for years at a time, sometimes at their request, but for the children serving the older anchorites, it was anything but welcome. This portion of the book was quite fascinating for me. The last half of the book, however, was a disappointment. I felt the writing slipped into melodramatics and I found myself skimming through to make it to the end.
review 2: I became interested in Hildegard's story after performing one of her songs as a member of the Early Music Ensemble at the University I attended. All I knew was that she was a woman, a nun, wrote beautiful music, and much of that music has survived through the centuries.
... moreYears later, her music, and what little I knew about her life, still influenced me enough to convince my book club to read this book. I was drawn into the story from the very beginning, and truly enjoyed reading this novelized version of her life. It was fascinating and heart-breaking at the same time. I loved the historical facts included at the end of the book. It is an amazing story and wonderfully written. less

Well-told fictionalization of the famous saint's life: a proudly--feminist and church reformer.

This "historical" novel of Hildegard Von Bingen did not ring true to me at all.
