review 1: First, the mystery itself is fine. Simple and a little contrived at times, but interesting enough. I would have liked to have seen or heard more of the haunting of Liz, however. Second, the idea of Heaven and Hell being a court system and a prison, respectively, was interesting as well and I liked the general portrayal of it, what little we got. I gave this a bit of a pass as it was the first in a series and figured this might be expanded on more later.Third, the low points. I realize that this is my personal nitpicks and irritances, so please, disagree if these don't bother you. I absolutely hate it when protagonists that have no clue what they are doing or what is going on are stonewalled by other characters and given no information because of vague reasons. (In reality,... more known as 'because the plot says so.') Bree, for example, is utterly lost and confused, but is being given the runaround by the angels. Why? They can't tell her anything, apparently, which at least would be an answer of some kind. "I'm sorry, but I'm not allowed to tell you." Annoying, but still an answer. Instead, they just ignore her questions outright. If I had been Bree, I would not have budged an inch until I got some kind of explanation for the shenanigans going on. She's being haunted by a possessed painting, has a dead guy for a client, and has an office that doesn't exist to the living. And she just goes with it, because the plot says so.A second low point for me is that this book doesn't know what genre it is. Is it magical realism? Is it straight fantasy? Pick one and stick with it. Genres can be blended, certainly, but this book doesn't do that. It jumps back and forth between the two, and I can't enjoy a book that does that. It's jarring at moments, irritating at others. There isn't a good flow between the two, and it nearly made me ditch the book two-thirds of the way through it. Another low point is going involve a bit of the second book, but it's a minor note in the first 80 pages (as far as I know, I only made it 80 pages in before I gave up on this series) and that is the fact that a gay (sort-of, since angels have no sex or gender, but Ron's corporeal form is a gay man) angel is fine, but a woman who has an abortion is automatically a murderer and is placed in the all murderers' cemetery.I realize this is a religious issue, and some readers of this might agree with that. I don't. I'm not going to go onto a rant about this, but I disagree that abortion is murder, and I'm not going to read a book or series that says otherwise.(For the record, a character can express those views, I have no issues with that, it's the 'automatically a murderer' thing that upsets me.)Ultimately, the low points dragged this book down for me. There's some good things in this book, but that just made the bad stand out all the more to me.
review 2: I have had this book sitting on my nightstand for a while (I was cheating and piling new books on top of it instead of below). I purchased it at the strong recommendation of a friend and really against my will. :)I don’t generally read paranormals and I really don’t read religious reads and I really don’t care for “angel” books, so…anyway. After reading it, I have to admit it held my attention and skipped along at a pretty good pace. I had some issues with the book but not what I would expect. There is really no “preachiness” that I thought for sure would be there. The angels are not the sickly sweet, Lifetime TV movie types so that was good as well.If I had to characterize this, I would definitely say that it is much more of a paranormal than a cozy. The mystery takes a back seat to the celestial beings. I don’t want to reveal too much but it is hard to discuss my issues with the book without saying something. The protagonist, Brianna, behaves…really strangely at times and doesn’t really sleuth. Things that should terrify and upset her don’t really and other times she is a violent rager with no real cause. She doesn’t have concerns or ask questions that I (and any rational person) would. This may be due to something revealed towards the end, but that was not really made clear, it is just my supposition. My other issue is that the ending felt really rushed…We had the reveal for the story on the temporal plane, but when it came to the celestial one, it just ended quickly and with no detail. It seemed really odd because the angel story was the main story line throughout.I am intrigued enough that I will buy the next one and see if it resolves these issues. less
