review 1: CATEGORY: REQUIRED AUTHORMexican Whiteboy is a novel written in two voices. One is Danny, a half-Mexican, half-white boy and the other is Uno, half-Mexican, half-black. Each of these teens struggle with their identities, part of each culture, but not fully a member of either. Danny decides to spend the summer with his aunt and uncle in their Southern California neighborhood. There, he meets Uno, and the two of them spend the summer honing Danny’s pitching skills. Together, they grapple with family issues and come to terms with their identities. An interesting look at mixed-blood culture, Matt de la Peňa creates a story that is simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking. I really liked this book. It’s funny and touching and deals with a question we have all wondered... more: “Who am I?” I would recommend this book to ages 14-17.
review 2: I understand how this book could very relatable to some -- many are of mixed race and enjoy sports. For me, being a boring white male who cannot play sports to save his life, I had a hard time getting into this novel. It was very well written and I believe de la Pena has a great philosophy about young adult literature. However, I simply did not connect with the content. Some other books I have read in a semester of young adult literature kept me turning the pages and racing to the end. This went at a more leisurely pace and ended rather abruptly without fuss. Overall, 3 of 5. less
