review 1: A Nation's Hope: The Story of Boxing Legend Joe Louis is a non-fiction picture book about one of the biggest fights in boxing. Joe Louis is a boxing legend and this picture book is written so children can understand the significance he had on boxing. This book is great for students who enjoy reading about sports figures and the details in the illustrations enhance the story. When teaching literacy, this book can be used for teaching students different strategies when they come across new vocabulary words. Students can learn to segment words, or finding word meaning through the context. As an example, the word "amateur" appears in the book and by reading the sentence students can use the context at which it is used to determine its meaning.
review 2: “There wa
... mores something about his hands, so big and powerful Nights he’d stare down at those hands and dream”. Joe’s mama wanted him to play violin. On music lesson days, Joe would hide in a gym and watch the boxers spar. His dream was to become a fighter so he returned day after day. Finally he stepped out of the shadows and began to learn to box. He would become the Nation’s hope against the Nazis prized boxer. The writing and illustration in this picture book is unbelievable! less
