review 1: Powerful story, fictionalized but inspired by the author's own family history of the Japanese internment camps. This is a good introduction to the topic and the text is large and bold which will make it a good choice for reluctant readers as well. I just love the artist's work, the heads are just a little too oblong to be proportionate making for an interesting style. This is a hard-hitting tale that deals with racism, bullying, family conflict and fear along with the historical element. A compelling story that leaves the reader somber with its bittersweet ending.
review 2: The tone of this is just right, I think. Given the subject matter it could easily have been too grim or bitter or any number of emotions. Koji's father went back to Japan years ago, leavin
... moreg him and his American mother in San Francisco. In the aftermath of Pearl Harbor, millions of Japanese Americans are relocated to "resettlement camps", essentially prisons. Rather than dwelling on the harsh unfairness of it all, Faulkner shows people adjusting to camp life. Some act out, of course, but others make the best of a bad situation. Yes, there is unfairness and harshness and wrongness, but it's not dwelt upon, not thrust into the spotlight. The result is somehow more moving than any amount of guilt-tripping could ever be. Very nice! less

Wonderful, wonderful story. Heartbreaking to think this happened to so many Japanese-Americans.
Crash
A powerful first person look at Japanese interment camps, the ending felt very rushed however.
