review 1: The best collection of poetry ever written. EVER! I suppose I should elucidate and let it be known that poetry and I do not normally get along. It's probably because most of the time it's too abstract for me to grasp and comprehend; or because when I've had to study poetry in the past, the professors would go on and explain why the poem is so great and why I should proclaim that it's brilliant. With Dickman's poetry, though, it's so easy to fall in love with his style and his views on love. However much I wish I could hate this collection of poetry, I cannot. It's beautiful, sincere, and, above all, what I've always believed that poetry should be. It's completely unpretentious and doesn't rely on obscure references like those shitty modernist poets do. The poems found in t... morehis collection are straight to the point and not all difficult to understand, as long as you've been in love or have a heart, that is.
review 2: Though talented poet Matthew Dickman had several poems published individually, ALL-AMERICAN POEM is his first complete book of poetry. Dickman’s poetic voice is singular, striking a chord between high and low diction every time. He manages to jump from the most plebian to the most profound of thoughts and events within the same line on multiple occasions. All of his images resonate as well, and his musings never fail to leave readers pondering. Even his most comedic of poems felt deeply philosophical because of Dickman’s keen eye for new angles on old topics. Each poem is a perfect length. Most of them range between one and two pages, with the occasional poem falling longer or shorter if it needs to. The collection is also spectacularly organized, taking readers firmly by the hand on a roller coaster ride of laughter and tears while reading. (And if you aren’t going to read the whole collection, you should still read “Slow Dance”.) less

It's pretty rare that my husband and I both totally love a book of poetry. This book wins.
