review 1: For the first time ever Ant is invited to one of Lion's special dinners. She makes sure she is on time and on her best behavior. However, she is quite shocked to see all of the other animals arrive late to dinner. And their manners! Terrible! Finally dinner is over and dessert is being served. Greed takes over as Elephant takes half of the cake. Hippo takes half of what's left and so on and so forth until the cake comes to Ant. She struggles to only take half of the crumb that's left, but it just crumbles.Mortified, Ant apologizes to Lion and promises to bring him a wonderful cake just for him the next day. But the other animals, of course, have to best her. Each animal offers twice the number of cakes than the previous animals. By the end, Elephant has promised to bring 25... more6 cakes! The next day Ant brings the Lion one perfectly baked cake while the other animals are struggling with their numerous promised cakes.
review 2: This is a cute, but quite long, story about an ant that goes to a dinner at the king's palace. The king brings out a cake for dessert and passes it around the table. Each animal takes a fraction of the cake until finally there's nothing left but a crumb. The ant feels bad because there is nothing left for the king, so she decides to bake a cake. The rest of the animals, not wanting to look bad, also bake desserts until there are way too many for the king to eat. I like the beginning of this story because students can reduce the fraction, but I think that the story is a bit long and can lose the interest of the students over time. less
