review 1: I really struggled to think how to write this review. On the Kindle only 34% of the 'book' is actually this story - the rest seems to be an extract for the book this precedes. I cannot even decide if this story can be considered a novella... it was very very short and wouldn't have been the page count I'd give to a murder/mystery style story. The writing was fine, but I found it very 'modern'. If you read some of the other period style books the writing matches or accompanies the era well, whereas here it felt like someone from 2014 describing events from the 1600s - it might work for some people but I found it jarring. This effect wasn't helped by the King's profanity ridden 'talk' with Ascham and then the conversation between him and the whore... The reveal of the 'villai... moren' of the piece reads as if I am meant to be somewhat shocked by this turn of events but I wasn't, I also hadn't had enough page time with Ascham to give a damn as to whether he lived or died (that and knowing this is a prequel kinda takes away any sense of jeopardy you might have).Has this enticed me to read the book it precedes or read any other works of this author? Honestly, no it hasn't - but it hasn't made me want to avoid the author either.
review 2: I just finished The Tournament so figured I would round it off with the free short story featuring the same hero, set 6 months before the main book, the events of which are referred to a few times. Unfortunately this meant the villain was not a surprise but it didn't matter. The main disappointment was that the story was half the length it seemed since the rest of the ebook is taken up with an extract from TT. As short stories go this was good, and introduced various of the characters from the main book, as well as an entertaining cameo by Henry VIII. less
