review 1: I actually abandoned this book after 130 pages (of 286). I don't remember the last time I did this. I feel that it's not done to put a book away without finishing it and have been dutifully ploughing away at it for a week but then I thought "I read for enjoyment, don't I?"The only reason I have given it 2 stars is because of the quality of the prose, which is very good. The story however, drags interminably. It is so slow it almost goes backwards. There is no detection of the sort that I like, no detective either. The plot is mainly just dialogue between the characters.I might pick it up again later but I doubt it. Very disappointing.

... morelt that too much of the action took place off-stage. We come into a story set in a boarding house where most of the characters have been living for years, which is an interesting change from the standard country-house mystery plot, but the problem with this approach is that the relationships have already developed before the story opens. This made it hard to get interested in the setting or characters. I may read her other books if I can't find anything better to check out, but I don't think I'll pay for them. less
