review 1: I read The Princess Diaries when I was fifteen so I thought I'd read them and approach them more objectively - though I always liked them - and upon re-reading them at a semi-mature age, I'm still transported to Mia's world of AEHS, royal responsibilities and teen angst. The first PD starts with a fourteen year old pubescent, non-self-actualised and non-royal Mia and ends with an eighteen year old, somewhat self-actualised Mia. We, the readers, are able to empathise and criticise her inability to confront the issues in her life - her royal status, her father's flirtatious nature, her mother marrying her algebra teacher and her undying love for her best friend Lilly's brother, Michael. After reading all ten books again, (I'm so glad I did!) I can empathise with my teen self... more for looking to these books for assurance and finding that they still made me laugh and appreciate the pop-culture references and the overriding love story. Do read, even if you are not a teenage girl and can stomach a whiny but loveable girl like Mia. I'm also thrilled there will be an 11th installment in my favourite series next summer! Woo!
review 2: Really loved and adored this book by Meg Cabot. "Princess Diaries" is funny and romantic at the same time. Perfect book for teenage girls. You can actually learn a lot from this book, if you are a teenage girl who is tired of your family yelling at you or sick in bed because you have hemorrhoid problems. Haha, I'm just kidding. I think Princess Diaries is the first serial book I have read. I learnt several important things from this book:1. You should be more responsible for something that you love. Mia Thermopolis loved writing more than anything else. When she had a problem, or fight with her boyfriend, Michael Moscovitz, she was always attached into her diary. She did not just write in her diary for few days and left it in the corner of her drawer. Also, she loved her family and whenever something not good happened to them, she was always there for them.2. She put righteous principle-paradigm in the first place. What I mean is, whatever situation happened to her, she chose to be right. Well yeah, young people make mistakes but she learnt from it and at least she tried to be right at any situation. But I think she worried too much for others than herself. less
