review 1: Such a cute story! This is a novel about two lifelong friends turned frenemies after an awful misunderstanding. What makes it unique is the author's use of place; San Francisco and it's various neighborhoods serve as additional characters to the rich patchwork of the story. Living in San Francisco, I could appreciate the author's interpretations and discussions of the city's distinct personalities and the types of people that inhabit each geographical area. That being said, I think anyone can enjoy this book. An element of mystery woven throughout the novel kept me hungry for more, and the descriptions of the cupcakes and other sweet confections were absolutely delicious!
review 2: I picked up this book off the library shelves when I was reading first lines--lo... morets and lots of fist lines--as a matter of study. I didn't look at back copy blurb, I just opened the book and started. When I opened "How to Eat a Cupcake," I read the first line and found myself two paragraphs down before I realized I had read more than I intended. So I checked it out.This is one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a very long time. It's told in alternating POVs. Annie is instantly endearing. Julia takes more time to begin to root for, but in the interim her POV still pulls you forward. Donohue has three "mysteries" to explain, and she brings them out one at a time over the course of the book, so there's always something to look forward to.And come on, it has "cupcake" in the title. How can you not want to read that? less
