review 1: This is a rather shallow, plot-driven story that hits some clunky, deaf notes about race and class. I might have known that something called "How to Eat a Cupcake" would be a light read, but I was forced to plow through this for my book club. The beginning was unbearable, but once I became accustomed to the style, it wasn't too hard to finish this. Not even worth it for the cupcake descriptions. Didn't even make me want a cupcake.
review 2: How is this book a best seller? I fear our standards as readers are at rock bottom. This book is filled with one dimensional characters and predictable themes. There are plenty of charitable reviews from professional reviewers of this little book. That's how the publishing industry keeps churning. They claim this book is a h
... moreilarious story of two women who have come of age blah, blah. I found both characters to be petulant, juvenile, downright nasty and superficial. It was unpleasant to spend time with them. It was like being back in high school with those two girls in the circle who just never get along. There was nothing humorous in this story. And what is up with the poor writing in so many of these popcorn books today?: "In the dream I was running from someone or something but had been injured and too slow to escape." (p. 92).Sort your past tenses out, girl. Pick one and stick to it. "The large, black-steel-framed front window and door were in place as was the steel-and-glass display counter and shelving units." (p. 109). Was they really in place? When stupid writing like that targets my demo I feel they must think us stupid. Stand up, chicks, and demand smarter "lit." Never mind all that. The book failed to entertain in any way. Waste of a good eyeball. less

A cute, charming little book all about friendship and tests of time.It is true that horrible things that happen in high school stay with you, even 10 years later, like for Annie. I liked Annie's spunk and sass and really appreciated how confident she was in her abilities.I had a hard time warming to Julia until she broke through some barriers. After that, I found her a bit more likable. One thing I didn't like is that Julia didn't have a lot of faith in her fiance to handle difficult news, which seemed a bit short-sighted for her character. All in all, a good book and a quick read.

Unfortunately, this book ended up being just like a cupcake - mildly tasty, quick to consume, not terribly memorable. I felt like the author was trying to toss together too many genres and wrap it up in a pretty little package. If she had stuck to one or two plot lines and fully developed them, it might have been a decent book. I define a good book by if I want to read more by the author; I didn't even bother reading the excerpt for her next book at the end of this one. Oh well...

Easy, quick read. Not my usual genre, but a nice change of pace. And who doesn't love cupcakes? ;)
