review 1: This book was just bizarre, like a kitchen sink of plots. It started out intriguingly enough, but then it devolved into a weird family drama/eastern European mob thriller/commentary on international aid work/vaguely incestuous... I don't even know. And somehow I was supposed to believe that all these things fit together in a way that made any sense at all. The only reason I'm giving it two stars and not one is that the action scenes at least kept my interest (even when they were completely ludicrous).
review 2: This was your standard thriller but with some additional nice touches. Female leaves one-horse town after breaking up with love; female comes back to town; (surprise! so does male love!); male and female try to figure out why someone wants to kidnap her.
... more The additional nice touches come from Gardiner's depiction of family, ranging from family of love but not blood to the kind of family you'd run to Alaska to get away from. Characters (and parts of the plot) weren't quite believable, but they were definitely interesting, and plot moved quickly. less

Eh. Not awful, but not anything to get me excited about this author.
