Jo Beckett
review 1: I enjoyed Gardiner's Evan Delaney series of books (very much) and decided to check out this series. As a first book in the series, this is a great start. Jo Beckett is a feisty, smart woman with a circle of friends and family to keep things interesting. I like that she's not a lone wolf like so many other female (and male) protagonists in this genre. I do have some issues with her profession: forensic psychiatrist...seems like a made-up job to me (I'm sure I'm wrong in this assessment, but I didn't find that part interesting or compelling). She could be any sort of detective or PI or lawyer, whatever; the skills did not seem to be particular. However, that aside, I did like her backstory of tragedy and her blossoming relationship. The case was twisty and interesting, and a... morelthough it wrapped up the personal and case stories a little too neatly, I enjoyed this start to the series and will continue to read.
review 2: Dr. Jo Beckett is a forensic psychiatrist. She does not perform medical autopsies on the dead. She performs psychological autopsies. Her job is to determine the mental state of the victims of murder or suicide. She has worked with the San Francisco police on several cases before she is called out for the latest. There has been a string of high profile murders and suicides in San Francisco lately. All of them involved high profile individuals, the latest being a U.S. attorney. Teamed with SFPD Lieutenant Amy Tang, Jo begins to dig for the truth. What she finds is stranger than fiction. A sadistic psychopath is killing off members of a shadowy group known as the Dirty Secrets Club, whose members all have shameful events in their past. But what is the connection? Jo and Amy are close to catching the individual behind the deaths when Jo receives a threatening letter detailing a dirty secret of her own. Just when you think that you know who did it and why, there is another twist. Fast moving and a great read. less
