review 1: While the first half of this book felt a little slow and atmospheric, the second half was a race to finish as all the threads of the story come together. The wonderful contradictions that Sonia faces as she moves to the captial parallel her struggle to find a true place for herself in the world. This turned out to be a lovely coming-of-age historical fiction, with just the right amount of anguish to keep the pages turning. Definitely recommend reading this one!
review 2: I finished reading it! Sonia was a strong character because she risked making a change in her life when her father didn't want her too. She is committed to her family but she wanted more to her life than what her family and community expected of her and I respect the courage it takes to pursue
... moreyour own goals against the odds. With that said I think the original reason I stopped reading this book was because I felt that the story is a stereotype. It starts of that way. Country girl with traditional beliefs breaks away from tradition and family to make something of herself. But that isn't this story. And it doesn't have a very happy ending which surprised me since this is a young adult story. All in all she stays true to self and tradition. Read it to find out how. less

Fantastic writing, well-developed storyline, rich characters. Just not for me--not my kind of story.

Ok but sad and heavy, not very romantic or magical and the ending was awful

Not bad, a little thin and mostly a tale of despair and broken dreams.
