review 1: I really liked this book and wouldn't have minded if it had gone on a while longer. It's got a lot going for it: very likable characters (especially the MC Sonia, her brother Rafael, and her friend Pancho), a quaint and lovely setting (Tres Montes, a rather isolated village in a Spanish-speaking country, possibly in South America), and real-to-life sad/happy/heartbreaking/humorous situations. It felt as though the author deliberately kept the setting vague (calling the capital simply that) and it gave the story the feel of a fable or legend, somehow. There are quite a few themes and subplots--an old and ruined love affair, immigration, coming of age, escaping your hometown/lot in life, the power of money, etc.--and the author manages to weave all of these together beautif... moreully.
review 2: Sonia Ocampo was born during a terrible storm, but on the moment she was born the winds stopped and nobody was killed during this terrible storm, so the people of Tres Montes believed that Sonia was special, she had a power, she was sent by God to help them, so since her birth Sonia carried the weight of all the favors that were asked on her back (literally since she carried a shawl with little charms, shaped like the thing the people wanted like a mouth to prevent bad gossip, a foot for a good trip and so on, made of metal sewn on it) Sonia doesn't believe, and doesn't want to be special, and when opportunity arrives she leaves her little city behind to go work on the capital. Where she will meet a new world and find out more about herself and what she wants. less
