review 1: Meghan O'Rourke gives a touching account of her mother's battle with cancer. I found myself turning the pages, not wanting her mother to die, but wanting her to be out of her misery. O'Rourke goes on to share the mourning period after her mother's death, and how she searched for answers and meaning in books. I kept thinking, "She's a writer and a teacher. She's doing the only thing she knows how to do." And then at the end O'Rourke acknowledges her futile search for healing within the words in books, and her realization there were no answers to her own grief. A well-written and touching memoir.
review 2: My mother died nine years ago this fall and there are still times that I want to call her, share our days and check in...just like we did when she was alive. I
... more was 51 when she died. Meghan O'Rourke was in her early thirties, far too young for the shock wave to follow. Death may be an every day occurrence, but to those of us who have lost our mother, it can feel like the end of the known world, shattering our sense of place in life, and destroying appetite and sleep. This is how it was for Meghan who with her brilliant intellect, knife-sharp writing skills and devastating sadness, levels with us about how her life fell to pieces after her mother - a vibrant, intelligent, funny and beautiful woman - died. If your own mother has died, whether recently or long ago, prepare to revisit the long lonely walk of grief. There are times I flinched at Meghan's true arrow shot of insight and perception and yet, strangely, was glad that I did. It meant that some old blanketed aspect of my grieving was uncovered and brought to light, revealing buried longing, pain and - always - love. less

This book was heartbreaking, but it helped me cope with losing my step-mom, who mothered me so well.

Poignant and beautifully written. A very useful read for anyone wanting to look at grief and loss.
