review 1: The Unquiet Bones is an excellent, quick read. If you are fond of historical fiction that tells a good story, without the author getting bogged down in unnecessary description that doesn't move with the narrative, then this is a book for you. Details and description of 14th century English life will seep into your brain as the plot flows, without the feeling that you are back in a classroom lecture. The glossary at the front of the book assists with the occasional archaic phrase that comes up in the text. Having finished this first book in the series, I immediately opened the second. I usually reserve 5 stars for books that I want to recommend to my friends and this is just such an one.

... moreinted. Unquiet Bones is a delightful read. Mel Starr obviously has a thorough knowledge of the period and conveys his story in a compelling and convincing voice. Part of that voice is the use of archaic vocabulary at times. A glossary lets a devotee like me pick up new words, but you won't miss anything significant to the plot if you don't care to look things up. Surgeon Hugh de Shingleton is a shy and likable young man with some pretty modern ideas of effective treatment, but his insights are realistically explained. The spiritual references add a special dimension and are appropriate in the historical context. I will definitely seek out more books in this series. less
