review 1: Slecht vertaald of slecht geschreven? Ik ben niet kapot van dit boek hoewel ik toch graag over de middeleeuwen lees. Misschien omdat de research er te dik bovenop lag? Omdat met grote regelmaat nogal "uitleggerig" geschreven werd? Omdat dingen die al duidelijk waren voor de zekerheid nog eens herhaald werden of simpelweg door de vele kromme zinnen? Misschien ook wel door de iets te brave toonzetting gedurende het boek - alsof het door een jong en lichtelijk naïef meisje werd verteld.Jammer want dit boek heeft wel potentie, het uitgangspunt en de setting zijn leuk.Maar ik denk niet dat ik meer Master Hugh-mysteries zal willen lezen.
review 2: I enjoyed this book very much. The premise was interesting - a scholar turned surgeon (not a physician); Oxford and its ... moreenvirons; a somewhat grisly murder(s); a depiction of daily life in a village; inclusion of a real person (John Wycliffe) as a mentor; and setting the story in a time when people like Wycliffe were laying the groundwork for the Reformation. I also liked that the pace matched that of the time - things didn't happen instantaneously in the early middle ages. The pace of days was marked by bells, the weeks by saints days, the months and years by the progress of seasons and the ecclesiastical calendar. This book illustrates why I return to mysteries as a genre - they are perhaps the best depiction of daily life that we have. The writing is not always imaginative but that comes with practice. I have requested the next in the series from the library. less
