review 1: Another in Starr's medieval series set in 14th century England, and it's been a awhile since I read the others. Hugh de Singleton is back and he's a little off his form (in my humble opinion). Seems like he makes a few more mistakes now that he's married and has a child. Guess that happens. I enjoy this series. Starr does a great job of putting the reader right therein the 14th century, and he seems to know where we'll need more historical background or vocabulary information. I enjoy his style tremendously, and he says things so eloquently. Can't think of a specific example now, but I definitely chuckled aloud at his word choice and really felt Master Hugh has a great sense of humour.
review 2: A stranger, beaten to death on lands overseen by Hugh de Singleton... more, turns out to have had much more than the cheap stocks he sold from his cart. In fact, he shouldn't have been able to afford such a cart. His knowledge made him prey to a group of predators ironically known as gentlemen. Hugh and his henchmen are forced to make a number of dangerous rescues before they make the right one, and then it begins to look as though they were all for nothing.THE TAINTED COIN was good in general, but one operation was set up with such a stupid mistake that no one involved could have made it. It seemed as if the author had been instructed to pad the length of the book. A couple of the rescues could have been given more relevance, which would have lengthened the book in a more natural way. less
