Chronicles of a Reluctant Necromancer
review 1: 4.5 stars - I am not a YA/NA reader but I really liked Ward Against Death. This is a story set in a fantasy universe with a great hook, Edward (Ward) De'Ath is a necromancer who is hired to 'Wake' the young and beautiful Celia who died of an 'illness', Ward is only supposed to bring her back for fifteen minutes but Celia manipulates him into bringing her back long enough to solve her own murder. Oh and by the way the lovely Celia is an assassin.I loved both of these characters and didn't find their twenty something age off putting. Ward is completely appealing, he is initially totally befuddled by Celia, so his intelligence is not apparent to her, but he is honorable and light to her dark calling and suspicious nature. Celia has a really hard time believing that Ward is wh... moreat he seems. The mystery surrounding Celia's death is interesting too and there is some nice action as Celia and Ward gather up the clues before the 'answer' comes looking for them. There is not really a romance yet, just a couple kisses, since a relationship with someone who is dead is forbidden.I liked this so much that I immediately bought the next one, Ward Against Darkness, (thank goodness it is already out because there was a two year wait between the releases) and went to the author's site looking to see if there would be more - Card's just finishing up the third but didn't mention a release date. Finds like these are what keep me stalking my Goodreads friends' updates:)
review 2: So this book, I liked it, I didn't love it. I did however really enjoy Ward, I like the shy, nerdy kind of guy who always comes through in the end. It's a nice change from the tough guy, alpha male in most novels. Another reason I think I enjoyed him as much as I did is because I kept on picturing Daniel Jackson (Stargate SG-1) as him, and I have a soft spot when it comes to him. Celia, I just wasn't feeling her, probably due to the fact she wasn't always the nicest to Ward and well I like him. less
